Questions To Ask A Doula

A Guide for Parents-To-Be

Choosing a doula is a personal decision.

Your doula will likely support you through one of the most vulnerable, intense, emotional, and important experiences of your life. Finding the right fit matters.

This guide is here to help you feel more confident when speaking with potential doulas and to help you understand what support may look like before, during, and after birth.

Every doula is different. Some focus on birth support, some focus on postpartum care, and others offer both. Some doulas have additional training in areas like VBAC support, trauma-informed care, neurodivergent family support, breastfeeding support, bodywork, childbirth education, or pregnancy loss support.

The goal isn’t to find the “perfect” doula. It’s to find someone whose approach, communication style, values, and support align with your needs.

What Is A Doula?

A doula is a trained support person who provides non-medical emotional, informational, and physical support throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

Doulas can support families through many different birth experiences, including:

  • Vaginal birth
  • Induction
  • Caesarean birth
  • VBAC
  • Epidural births
  • Homebirth
  • Hospital birth
  • Assisted birth
  • Postpartum recovery

Doulas do not replace your medical care providers. Instead, they work alongside your care team to help you feel informed, supported, prepared, and heard throughout your experience.

Research has shown doula support may be associated with:

  • Increased birth satisfaction
  • Reduced rates of some interventions
  • Increased confidence and emotional support
  • Improved breastfeeding outcomes
  • Reduced feelings of fear and overwhelm
  • Greater continuity of support throughout labour and birth

Before The Interview

Before meeting with doulas, it can help to think about:

  • What type of support are you hoping for?
  • Do you want more emotional support, education, advocacy support, practical tools, postpartum support, or a combination?
  • What kind of communication style feels good to you?
  • Do you want someone calm and gentle, direct and informative, nurturing and hands-on, or a mix?
  • Are there specific experiences or support areas important to you?

There’s no right or wrong answer. The most important thing is finding someone you feel safe and comfortable with.

Remember — Connection Matters

You don’t need to ask every question on this list. Sometimes the biggest indicator is simply how you feel when speaking with someone.

Do you feel:

  • Comfortable?
  • Heard?
  • Supported?
  • Safe asking questions?
  • Judged or not judged?
  • Relaxed around them?

Your doula relationship is personal. It’s okay if someone is lovely but simply not the right fit for you.

Green Flags To Look For

While every doula works differently, some positive signs may include:

  • They listen without judgement
  • They communicate clearly and honestly
  • They respect your choices and preferences
  • They make your partner feel included
  • They support informed decision-making rather than telling you what to do
  • They speak respectfully about care providers and birth choices
  • They help you feel calmer, safer, and more confident
  • You feel comfortable being yourself around them

Things To Remember

A doula’s role is not to make decisions for you. A doula’s role is to support you.

The “best” doula isn’t necessarily the one with the most followers, the most births attended, or the most training certificates.

The best doula for you is someone whose support feels aligned, safe, supportive, and reassuring for your family.

Take your time. Ask questions. Trust your instincts.
